Mysterious Departure
Cocoroan School of the Art

Moving beyond the rules of printing enables me to push the boundaries of the medium in order to have fluidity with the outcome. I work improvisationally by seeing printmaking tools and techniques as instruments. Like jazz musicians working between composed structure and spontaneous invention, I move between these two ways of making, letting each inform the other. This overlapped process allowed me to develop a rhythm that reflects the freedom of my identity and ritual improvisation, paralleling music.
Mysterious Departure is an ode to the sensation of Black music, centering around the process of printmaking, as an act of spiritual departure. Carrying with me the festive memories of my family, I focus on how a space provides a brief moment for emotional release, discovery, and authenticity to live confidentially in your skin. These visual portals are the moment before that departure; a still moment to reflect.

In the Midst of
A Collaborative Print Series with
Jeanette M. Bolden
We are testing and flexing our muscles. Venturing into the unknown to follow something unnamed. We search by pushing syrupy ink into knobby paper, where parts will resist. Impressions are made on top of impressions. There are no mistakes, no winning or losing. Moment to moment, we follow the rules, then break them. It’s in these fleeting moments that we find joy in the Midst of this unknown.
After the here and there, an answer is given to a question:
What can we make when we give up some of our control?
